Expect the Unexpected—What to Do When Life Hits You Hard

No matter how much we try, we have very little control over our own lives.

You may be a senior executive at work, but when recession hits, you’re also one of the employees most likely to be laid off.

People that have never smoked in life get diagnosed with lung cancer all the time.

There are so many things in life that we can’t control; so much can happen that will force us to shift our direction.

Here’s what to do when life hits you hard:

1) Accept pain

Pain in life is inevitable, so take a few days to process what has happened. Accept that things have changed and you will have to adapt accordingly. You’ll struggle to move forward if you can’t accept your present.

2) Mind over matter

If you’re headstrong, you can get through anything life throws at you. Being overwhelmed by negative emotions hampers your ability to push ahead. Meditate to calm your thoughts and learn to compartmentalize. Tell yourself this is a temporary phase and that you will get through it.

3) Take it as a learning experience

You have the choice to be weighed down by what you’re experiencing or learn from it. As cliché as it sounds, what doesn’t kill you does in fact make you stronger. Take this as an opportunity to get to know yourself a little better.

This low time in your life is something to learn from. Such experiences make you an empathetic, wiser individual.

4) Don’t obsess over what you can’t control

One of the key differences between people who are happy and those who aren’t is their ability to accept what they can’t control and focus on what they can.

Obsessing over all that you can’t control is going to send you down the dark road to depression. There’s no point in dwelling over what’s gone, so concentrate on what’s yet to come and make sure it’s the best it can be!
