Honoring Dad: How My Father Turned My Diagnosis Into Opportunity

My father shaped the person I am today. He showed me what it means to be a loving husband and father, while always pushing me to go beyond my own limits. His guidance and encouragement set me on the path to success.

I will never forget my accident or the challenges that followed. Life seemed to stop the moment I was told I’d never be able to use my arms or legs again. I pictured a future confined to a chair, relying on others for even the smallest tasks. That diagnosis felt like the end of my freedom. In the face of that uncertainty, my father was my unwavering support, standing by me and confronting the unknown with strength and determination.

“He looked at me and said, ‘Scott, if you can, let it happen,’ as he placed a golf club in front of me. That club became my goal, a challenge to overcome. At first, I learned to move just my fingers. Then, slowly, my hands and arms followed. Today, I can pick it up, hold it, and even swing it. The golf club now serves as a constant reminder: no matter what lies ahead, I have the power to take control and change my circumstances.”

As I mark another heavenly anniversary of my father’s passing, I want to honor and thank him. His unwavering support and encouragement shaped the course of my life, and I often wonder where I’d be without it. He remains my guiding example for how to live with purpose and motivate myself—and others. My father taught me that nothing is beyond reach. He instilled in me a powerful mantra: Vision, Grit, and Mindset, giving me the tools to pursue success in whatever path I choose.
