In my time as a keynote speaker, I have found that my story resonates with groups in high-risk occupations. About 6 months ago, I had the privilege of delivering a presentation on Business, Leadership, and Safety to leaders and supervisors at the Elevator Contractors Association Annual Meeting. The crowd was amazing, everyone was so lively and willing to learn. The energy made the place buzz with anticipation for my keynote.
In many occupations, such as Elevator Contractors, the topics of Vision, Grit, and Mindset are crucial to not only the success of their business, but also to their safety and wellbeing in the field. As I integrated these topics into my speech, I realized they were well-received due to their importance to the audience.
When speaking to them, we discussed what Vision, Grit, and Mindset look like and how they can set an example for their employees. The way that this workplace shift starts is with your Vision. You must envision a workplace that is willing and eager to make change. You must see yourself as someone who is capable of leading and enacting change. It is you that sets the example for your workplace to follow. Once you see these as reality, then comes the Grit.
With Grit, you must take the necessary steps to ensure success and safety. Grit is thoroughly preparing for the future. Grit is taking 5 minutes to finish all of the steps to minimize risk and potential dangers. In my life, Grit was securing my seatbelt the night I became a quadriplegic. But, because I didn’t take those extra 10 seconds, I had to face the consequences after the tragedy had occurred. Once you have executed your Vision and Grit, you must maintain your Mindset. This continues the cycle of change and success that you’ve implemented. You must keep a Mindset that holds your Vision and pushes you to keep Gritting through your preparation. When you have accomplished this, you will find that your workplace will reflect the same leadership efforts. Thus, ensuring a more safe and successful work culture.
