The Smallest Movement Can Change the Direction of Recovery

Most of the progress I’ve seen in recovery doesn’t start with a big moment. It starts with something small.

After my accident, the first real sign of progress was being able to move my right toe about an eighth of an inch. It didn’t look like much. But that small movement gave me hope. Over time my right wrist began to move, and as my range of motion improved it allowed two independent fingers — my index finger and thumb — to eventually grip a fork, shake my father’s hand, and begin rebuilding independence. It also showed me that grit is often measured in fractions, not in dramatic leaps.

In catastrophic injury and workers’ compensation settings, the same principle shows up every day. A patient who can take one more step, sit up a little longer, or communicate one clear preference is often moving the whole case forward. The people supporting that progress — nurses, case managers, therapists, physicians, and the organizations around them — are the ones who notice and protect those small wins.

Recovery is rarely linear. There are setbacks, complications, and long stretches where nothing looks like it’s changing. That’s where mindset and resiliency matter. When the focus stays on what can still be influenced today, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed, it keeps the work moving. Perseverance in these environments is less about ignoring the difficulty and more about refusing to let the difficulty become the only story.

I’ve spoken to a lot of clinical and workers’ compensation teams over the years. The ones that stand out are the ones that stay clear on what the person in front of them is still fighting for. They protect forward motion without minimizing the injury. That balance is what keeps people from getting stuck. And in this field, getting unstuck is part of the job.
