Vision As a Trait: How Can We Navigate Our Changing Landscape in Life?

With unpredictable events happening throughout our lives, what is the one thing we can control that would, in turn, change everything? Vision. When we allow our Vision to be malleable and flexible, we then allow ourselves the luxury of our dreams and ambitions. But, when we utilize our Vision so often that it then becomes a trait, that is when our dreams and ambitions come to fruition.

This month, on my social media, we are discussing the deeper meaning of Vision. I talk a lot about what Vision looks like in both the workplace and your personal life. This begs the question: How can we acquire Vision as a trait?

Typically our Vision is something we work towards to push us toward a specific goal, but what if we utilized it so often that it became a trait? What if it became something that pushed us beyond our limits every day? I remember the distinct moment in my life when I realized that Vision was the deciding factor of if I would reach my goals.

How My Changed Vision Allowed Me Absolute Freedom

After the accident that rendered me a quadriplegic, I was told by a doctor that moving my fingers was “the best it was ever going to get.” That day I chose to let the doctor determine my Vision for my future. I succumbed to the sentence my doctor had given me, ignored calls, and refused to speak to anyone. My father was the only one able to get me on the phone. After I told him what I was told about my condition, he got on the first plane to Florida. I woke up the next day and there he was, by my side in my hospital room.

My father had come to have a word with the doctor that commented on my mobility, as well as to remind me that I can always shift my Vision from what I was told to what I could change.

Moving Forward With A New Approach

Fast forward to today. I have practiced and relived this mantra so many times that I now consider Vision to be a trait that I possess. I’ve made it second nature to change my way of thinking when circumstances unexpectedly pivot. It wasn’t easy to adopt this though. There were times when I wasn’t sure how changing this would help me, and believed I would be defined by the hardships I faced. But, each time, I persevered.

By consistently choosing to shift my Vision towards imagining my success, I presented myself with newfound opportunities. In turn, I grew into a version of myself that I never thought I could be.
You are the only person that can decidedly make change in your life. Through discipline and determination we learn to make our Vision malleable, thus creating a trait that can service us. Let me ask you this, how can you shift your Vision today to better serve you tomorrow?
