What Happens When You Stop Waiting for the Perfect Moment

In sales, most of the pressure comes from the gap between what you want to happen and what’s actually showing up. The activity is there. The results aren’t. And every day that gap stays open, it gets easier to ease up.

I’ve been on both sides of that. Early in my career at Northwestern Mutual I was paid 100% commission with no leads and no salary. Most of the people who started with me were gone within three years. The ones who stayed didn’t have a better market. They had a different response when nothing was working. They kept their vision clear even when the short-term evidence didn’t support it.

The difference usually wasn’t a new product or a better script. It was the willingness to keep having the next conversation when the last several hadn’t gone anywhere. It was also the ability to tell a clear story that helped a prospect see how someone else in their situation had already moved forward. Grit, in that environment, looked like showing up for the next call when the last ten had produced nothing.

Stories do something numbers and slides don’t. They help people feel the outcome before they experience it. When an advisor can show, in simple language, how they helped someone protect income, manage a transition, or make a decision under uncertainty, it shortens the distance between interest and action.

The same thing shows up with teams. The groups that keep producing aren’t always the ones with the strongest market. They’re the ones that stay consistent on the controllable pieces — the conversations, the follow-up, the adjustments — even when the scoreboard hasn’t moved yet. That kind of resiliency is what separates a slow quarter from a lost year.

Waiting for conditions to improve before you increase activity is a choice. So is deciding that the next conversation still matters. Most of the time, the second choice is the one that changes the year.
